Course overview
CBT course is an empirically based psychological treatment for a variety of psychological problems (for e.g. depression and anxiety).
The CBT course at City College aims to introduce students the theoretical underpinnings of CBT and the skills required for an in-depth knowledge of the practice of this therapeutic approach.
CBT course seeks to examine and challenge clients with the manner in which their thoughts, beliefs and attitudes to various events and circumstances negatively affect their mood and behaviour.
Course is approved for CPD credits for members of the Psychological Society of Ireland.
What you'll learn
This CBT course consequently involves the critical observation and identification of behavioural activities and individual and environmental contexts in order to increase our comprehension, understanding and evaluative awareness of these. CBT is therefore designed to enhance the criticality of thinking; analysis; comprehension and application abilities in order to bring about behavioural change.
The thinking and applications skills attained from developing an enhanced critical comprehension of CBT can be applied in multiple persona, practical and professional settings. The module is therefore designed to be utilised in a number of contemporary situations and professions and environmental contexts.
For example, the learning derived from a more detailed critical comprehension and understanding of CBT may be applied and used by teachers in schools environments to support and develop in children’s education how to constructively and positively understanding how their individual thinking and behaviours impact on their mood and relationships with others.
Similarly particular sectors in a variety of professional career areas may utilise their enhanced understanding of the theory, practice and application of CBT to more effectively consider their own relationship to their working environment and individual situation in order to improve their productivity and manage their responses to stress, levels of demand on the self/groups, and comparable situations.
In particular individuals who already have a career, or are developing their professional practices and skills; notably, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and psychotherapists, may use those CBT thinking and applications skills explored in the module to enhance and further improve their professional client/patient relationships; approaches and support strategies.
The programme is designed to provide and enhance participants essential skills for sourcing and applying CBT techniques. It is grounded in an understanding of the underlying philosophy of CBT which includes Stoic and Socratic approaches to understanding life challenges.
The student will be introduced to a robust foundation of CBT knowledge, philosophy and practice based thinking and skills-based approaches and will be supported in their critical understanding of how to apply CBT techniques and philosophy in real life. The module will also consider the ethical role and contexts of CBT and associated required approaches.
This course is therefore designed to provide participants with an introduction to the theoretical, philosophical and practical application of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies within the ethical framework of their existing or emergent career development and employment situations; and/or their direct or associated professional engagement or context or interest in the subject area and disciplines associated with the subject area.
