About Human Resources

Human Resources professionals have many roles and responsibilities in their day-to-day job. They may be across hiring, management, and development of staff within an organisation. HR professionals may be involved in the formation of contracts, creating and fostering professional development opportunities, job reviewing, and assessing the needs of staff.

Almost every company has an HR department or employs staff who take on HR-related responsibilities. For this reason, it’s a great job role to be qualified in, as you can find work in companies of all shapes and sizes across all industries. More experienced HR professionals may be expected to have a good knowledge of employment law, GDPR, performance management, Microsoft Office suite software, and competencies around industrial relations and employee relations.

Careers in Human Resources

Starting a career in Human Resources can open you up to a wide variety of roles at many different types of businesses. You may be expected to focus on a limited area within a business, or your roles may have a wide scope. Generally, as you become more experienced and qualified, you’ll find yourself able to take on more responsibilities and move up with an HR department. Below are some of the key roles an HR professional may take on during their career:

  • Human Resources Officer
  • Human Resources Assistant
  • Human Resources Management Specialist
  • People and Culture Coordinator
  • Human Resources Analyst
  • Executive Director, HR, and Engagement
  • Learning and Development Manager
  • Recruitment Team Leader

Studying Human Resources in the UK

Human Resources is a buzzing sector of the job market in Ireland, and a course in human resources will put you on the path toward a career. These courses can be studied in a variety of ways and at a number of different levels, from foundation level up to university degrees. Short courses in Human Resources can often be paired with a university and leaving certificate-level qualification as a way to enter the HR workforce.

Courses that are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) can be a good choice for learners, or other in-depth HR courses can be great options for those looking to build on their HR management skills.

Before seeking work experience, a work placement, or part-time or full-time employment, taking on a course is a good idea. It’s a good idea to explore lots of different styles of courses, whether it’s online learning and online courses, in-person courses, part-time programmes, or courses that don’t have entry requirements such as prior learning or postgraduate qualifications.

See which works the best for you, and upon successful completion, you can look for career opportunities in large cities in Ireland, such as Dublin or Cork, or look for work further afield.

Is a Career in Human Resources Right for You?

For those wishing to start a career in HR, it’s important to consider your strengths and think about the areas you need to upskill in before searching for roles in this area. Soft skills like communication and organisation, paired with specialist skills that can be acquired through training, can help you begin your career in this area.
