Course overview

The LLB (Hons) Law is so much more than a degree – and with us, you’ll unlock doors and networks through our global community.  

Ideal for aspiring barristers and solicitors, the LLB (Hons) Law will enable you to progress onto a Bar Practice Course and prepare you in part for the new Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE). Not only that, the course also includes practical assessments and real-life scenarios to help reflect the new SQE regime. 

You’ll exciting cover core aspects of the legal system, which will give you a robust understanding of areas such as: 

  • criminal law, burden of proof and proposal for reform 
  • the Human Rights Act and European Convention on Human Rights 
  • legally enforceable contracts and the factors that render them unenforceable 
  • tortious liability, negligence and duty of care 
  • the nature of EU law, and the roles and functions of its institutions 

You’ll also complete your studies with an advanced independent programme of research into a legal topic of interest to you, or tailor your course through specialist optional modules.

Entry requirements

At University of Essex Online, we believe that everyone should be able to access education. That is why we offer two different entry routes onto our LLB (Hons) Law, which considers academic or work-based experience.   Academic entry route  You must have the following qualifications as a minimum: 

  • three A-levels or equivalent 

Work experience entry route  You must meet the following criteria: 

  • GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above, or equivalent 
  • three years’ relevant work experience 

English language requirement 

Our courses are taught in English so to study with us you must have an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 or equivalent. If you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification, you will be required to pass a free online English test to assess your proficiency.

Course features

We believe you get the most out of your time spent studying when you are kept informed of your performance, and we achieve this by:

  • assessing you throughout modules rather than waiting for end of year assessments
  • showing your marks in your grade book which can be viewed whenever you log onto the virtual learning environment (VLE)
  • rapid turnaround on work assessed to ensure your grade book is always up to date
  • ensuring you have regular contact with your Student Support team

Assessment

All assessments are delivered through our virtual learning environment (VLE). There is no requirement to travel to external test centres; instead, you will submit assignments through the VLE, such as written reports, discussion forum participation or reflective journal entries. For the few modules that have timed assessments, we use a virtual proctoring system which enables you to sit academically rigorous timed assessments virtually in the comfort of your own home.

We also have a policy of ensuring that the work submitted by students is authentic – we use a well-established electronic monitoring system to check for plagiarism.

Career prospects

This online LLB (Hons) Law is a qualifying law degree (QLD), allowing you to complete the academic stage of legal education. If you’d like to qualify as a lawyer, you must complete your degree studies in no more than six years and achieve a minimum of a Lower Second Class Honours degree.

Legal knowledge is highly valued by wide a range of sectors such as management, government and the voluntary sector.
