Fascinated with criminology – and at the same time wanting to obtain a law degree? Then study our LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology. This course is a perfect combination of both subjects, introducing you to exciting topics like criminal law, criminology and criminal behaviour. Study 100% online from the comfort of your home and tailor your studies with a range of law and criminology-related optional modules.  

You’ll also be prepared in part for the new Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) – or to progress onto a Bar Practice Course if you wish to become a barrister – while developing your criminological knowledge.  

During the course, you’ll build new skills and knowledge in many legal topics, including: 

  • principles of criminal liability and elements of major offences, including homicide and theft 
  • introduction to the English legal system, case analysis and statutory interpretation 
  • key historical and contemporary criminological perspectives of crime 
  • how EU law interacts with key decision-making procedures within organisations 

Towards the end of your studies, you’ll complete a detailed research project on any topic of interest within the scope of your degree.

Entry requirements

At University of Essex Online, we believe that everyone should be able to access education. That is why we offer two different entry routes onto our LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology, which considers academic or work-based experience.  

Academic entry route 

You must have the following qualifications as a minimum: 

  • three A-levels or equivalent 

Work experience entry route 

You must meet the following criteria: 

  • GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above, or equivalent 
  • three years’ relevant work experience 

English language requirement 

Our courses are taught in English so to study with us you must have an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 or equivalent. If you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification, you will be required to pass a free online English test to assess your proficiency.

Assessment

All assessments are delivered through our virtual learning environment (VLE). You’ll submit assignments through the VLE, such as written reports, discussion forum participation or reflective journal entries.

We also have a policy of ensuring that the work submitted by students is authentic – we use a well-established electronic monitoring system to check for plagiarism.

Career prospects

The online LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology is a qualifying law degree (QLD), allowing you to complete the academic stage of legal education. If you’d like to qualify as a lawyer, you must complete your degree studies in no more than six years and achieve a minimum of a Lower Second Class Honours degree.

Legal knowledge is highly valued by wide a range of sectors, including the management, government and voluntary sector. Additionally, your criminology knowledge will be beneficial for roles within criminal justice, the police, and prison and probation services.
