How Do You Become a Lawyer?

To begin a higher education Law course, Leaving Certificate Entry Requirements: Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 level in the Leaving Certificate, including Irish, English, another language and any three other subjects recognised for entry purposes.
If you’re keen to become a Lawyer in Ireland, you’ll need to get a qualifying law degree (LLB) from an Irish or UK university. A degree or qualification must meet the requirements set out by the King’s Inns or Law Society of Ireland. You can also obtain a postgraduate diploma in Law if you’ve already got a non-law undergraduate degree.
After you’ve obtained those qualifications, you can complete a Legal Studies course, which will give you the practical knowledge and legal skills you need to move on to the next step.
After this, you’ll take part in an Apprenticeship or Training contract. This process will help you develop your skills and give you the right work experience necessary to practise law in a professional setting.
Once you’ve completed your apprenticeship or training, you can apply to become a solicitor or barrister. For solicitors, you’ll need to apply to the Law Society of Ireland, whilst barristers will apply to the King’s Inns and complete a Barrister-at-Law degree programme.
After this, you’ll apply to the roll of solicitors or the Bar; then, you can start practising as a lawyer in Ireland.
